I am forming a panel for the upcoming Association for the Study of African American Life and History's (ASALH) annual conference in Richmond, Virginia, Oct. 5-9. The panel, broadly defined, considers the reactions of African Americans to the Emancipation Proclamation during the period between January 1, 1863, to the conclusion of the Civil War. My specific project views how enslaved communities in South Carolina reacted to the proclamation, particularly since the historiography has largely focused on white reactions, and largely neglects to address the responses of the enslaved community. I welcome proposals that touch upon a similar theme. Proposals can address both local and national scopes, Northern and/or Southern African Americans.
