The Rockefeller Archive Center (RAC) and the Association for Research on Nonprofit
Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) invite applications for a week-long
workshop on "Philanthropy and the Environment," to be held at the Archive Center in
Sleepy Hollow, NY on May 16-19, 2011. The workshop should benefit scholars at a
variety of stages: we envision it being helpful to post-comps graduate students
seeking a dissertation topic; to junior faculty looking for their next book project;
to senior scholars who have a long history working on environmental issues. Workshop
participants will have an opportunity to explore important primary source documents
pertaining to key topics including land conservation, the development of the
National Parks, water quality control measures, sustainable agriculture, and the
rise of the Green Revolution, among others. Participants will work closely with
archival staff to identify materials relevant to their research, and will connect
with other scholars who are engaged with a variety of environmental issues, as well
as leaders in foundations, think tanks, and nonprofit organizations. Furthermore,
participants' travel, lodging and expenses will be covered by the Archive Center.
Applications are encouraged from any discipline; part of the workshop's benefit will
be engagement across a range of perspectives, methodologies and theoretical
orientations. For more information about application procedures and the materials
contained in the Archive Center's collections, please use the web link listed below.
