From Portraits to Pinups: Representations of Women in Art and Popular Culture
On May 14, 2011, the Brooklyn Museum will hold a one-day academic symposium in conjunction with the exhibition Lorna Simpson: Gathered, which features works by the contemporary artist Lorna Simpson. The program will consist of two sessions, morning and afternoon; in each, a select number of graduate students will present research related to the theme “From Portraits to Pinups: Representations of Women
in Art and Popular Culture” and participate in a moderated discussion with other panelists.
Papers are not to be limited to the works of Lorna Simpson alone, but should respond to the theme of the symposium and explore the following ideas: women artists using images of women in their work; the relationship between popular culture and fine art; connections between women’s history and contemporary art; perceptions of race and gender; and representations of beauty.
We encourage the participation of students from various disciplines, including but not limited to art history, fine arts, history, feminist and gender studies, cultural studies, media studies, communications, performance studies, and visual studies. Submissions of creative nonfiction and of artist statements and images related to these themes will also be considered. Participants must be comfortable presenting and discussing their work in a group setting. Papers must be received by March 15, 2011. Late submissions will not be accepted.
Please e-mail papers, with a cover letter including name, university affiliation, and contact information,
as attached Word documents to Lian Amaris Sifuentes, Academic Programs Coordinator, at email@example.com.
