CFP Due 5/1/2011: Seeking chapter proposals for a book project about the re-creation of history and American public memory
We are soliciting chapter proposals for an edited volume about the re-creation of history and American public memory. From the battles fought for the War of Independence, to the first gay pride parade in 1969, to the election of the first African American president of the United States, the history and legacy of republican ideals and identities are often played out in the commemoration, celebration, and revision of historical events. Such public history shapes collective memory about the past, in some cases radically revising the status quo. We seek papers from a broad range of topics and time periods that address the commemoration of a specific event, person, or period, or which address the theory of historical memory as it is re/produced in commemoration, re-creation, celebration, and protest. Topics may include, but are by no means limited to: historical reenactment; historic sites; museums; celebrations and holidays; traditions; commemorative speeches; monuments; history and performance; historical dramatization. Of particular interest are approaches that interrogate the re/production of gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, religion, and geography within the re-creation of history in American public memory. Proposals that interrogate the borders of America are also welcome, particularly in cases where they analyze cultural contact in ways traditionally unheard in public commemoration.
The deadline for chapter proposals is May 1, 2011. Please e-mail your 500-word proposal and brief bio or CV to the editors:
