In the context of the project "Dissimulating Machiavelli", which is part of the international network "Machiavellism e Machiavellisms in the Western political tradition" (www.hypermachiavelism.net), coordinated by Professor Enzo Baldini (Università di Torino), in 2011 the international colloquium "Dissimulating Machiavelli: Religion, Empire and Roman Legacy in the Portuguese World" will be organized at the Instituto de Ciências Sociais of the Universidade de Lisboa (ICS-UL).
Investigating the creative reception of topics taken from the Florentine author’s writings in the Portuguese context is one of the aims of this colloquium. Its concrete focus will be on the political theory and praxis of the conquest and the conservation of territories in the context of the Portuguese imperial experience, as seen in the light of Machiavelli’s proposals. Special attention will be given to the relationship between the religious and the political dimensions, as well as to the Roman influence on those imperial dynamics.
Researchers are invited to present proposals in Portuguese, English or Italian (maximum 10 lines) until February 28th. The proposals and an abbreviated CV should be sent to angela.xavier@ics.ul.pt or g.marcocci@sns.it.
We will communicate the results of the selection process on March 31st.
