I'd like to propose a panel for the 2012 AHA meeting in Chicago that addresses "communities and networks" in the history of medicine. My paper engages the recent history of alternative medicine communities and networks. I argue that the recent coming of age of alternative medicine in the 1980s and 1990s can be seen as the result of the confluence of health activists from across the political spectrum. My paper examines the arguments employed by advocates and skeptics, and details the role played by these communities and networks in shaping the early history of alternative medicine at the National Institutes of Health specifically and the medical community more broadly. The deadline for submissions is 2/15 so if you could send me your contact information, abstract, and CV by 2/10 I should be able to put something together for the group. Please reply to boyleew@mail.nih.gov
