The University of Southern Mississippi sponsors COURT HOUSE, STATE HOUSE, HER HOUSE: SOUTHERN WOMEN AND POLITICS, a conference featuring the current work of 35 historians from the region and beyond. Employing a broad definition of "politics," the conference showcases papers which focus both on southern women wielding influence to affect policy, and on southern women seeking and holding elective office. Convening in Gulfport, Mississippi at the Courtyard by Marriott, the conference will run from March 31 through April 2. Highlights will include a conversation with Anne Firor Scott and a celebration of her 90th birthday, and a keynote address from Marjorie Julian Spruill, "Women's Rights, Family Values and the New Southern Politics of the 1970s." See website www.usm.edu/swpc for registration information, program and details of accommodations.
