CALL FOR PAPERS
LATINO/A FOCUS GROUP EMERGING SCHOLARS PANEL
THE ASSOCIATION FOR THEATRE IN HIGHER EDUCATION
The Latino/a Focus Group of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) invites submissions from emerging scholars who have not yet published refereed articles or presented at a national theater/performance studies conference for its competitive debut panel at the 2011 ATHE Conference. The theme of the conference is "Performance Remains, Global Presence: Memory, Legacy, and Imagined Futures" and it takes place at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel, Chicago, IL, August 11- 14, 2011.
Both graduate students and junior faculty members are eligible to submit. The deadline for submission is April 1, 2011. Papers should be an appropriate length for a 20-minute presentation (typically 10 pages or less) and address U.S. Latino/a or Latin American subject matter. While we welcome all panels and papers that address the conference theme broadly, we also encourage submissions that address other disciplinary questions. Transnational, comparative, and diasporic approaches are welcome.
A jury of theatre scholars will evaluate the submissions and select two papers to be presented at the conference as a part of “Curtain Up: Conversation Among Emerging Scholars,” jointly conducted with the Black Theatre Association (BTA) and the American Theatre and Drama Society (ATDS). This innovative format will allow greater dialogue among emerging scholars across the range of American theater and performance imagined continentally. Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes, Associate Professor of Latino/Latina Studies, American Culture, and Spanish Program in American Culture, Latina/o Studies Program, and Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan and Lara Nielsen, Assistant Professor of Theatre and Dance at Macalester College will serve as judges for the selection of the two papers that will be presented. Students and faculty members from non-performance based departments are encouraged to submit work. The selected papers will receive mentoring/feedback from the judges.
All presenters must register and pay the appropriate fees for the conference. Conference presenters should be ATHE members unless they work outside the academic study of theatre. For information on the conference (including applicable costs), and the Latino Focus Group see http://www.athe.org.
Please email an pdf version of your paper without your name by April 1, 2011 to Patricia Herrera (pherrera@richmond.edu). Please put "LFG Debut Panel Submission" in the subject heading and in the body of the email include the title of the paper, your name, address, telephone, email address and affiliation.
Receipt of your submission will be confirmed via email and you will be informed of the judges' decisions by April 28, 2011. If you have any questions about eligibility, submissions or the LFG, please contact Patricia Herrera (pherrera@richmond.edu).
