Duro Oni at 60
Call for Papers
Professor Duro Oni of the Creative Arts Department, University of Lagos, Nigeria, turns 60 on the 15th December 2012. This lighting designer and theatre scholar has in the last thirty five years provided profound leadership for the practice and scholarship of design and technology (technical theatre) in Nigeria. It is from this standpoint that he remains a respected moulder of artistes and designers for the Nigerian stage and the motion picture sector known as Nollywood. Beyond these, Oni is a distinguished and versatile cultural activist who has made significant contributions to the development of the cultural sector in Nigeria via his goal-getting services as a one time Director of the defunct Centre for Cultural Studies, University of Lagos; Special Adviser to the Hon. Minister of Culture and Social Welfare and later that of Youth and Sports; Alternate Chairman for the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Design of the National Stadium, Abuja; Director/Chief Executive of the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC) and many more. These remarkable credentials positioned him well to earn the prestigious Fellowships of the Society of Nigeria Theatre Artistes (SONTA) and that of the Ferguson Centre, Open University in the United Kingdom. It is in recognition of the immense contributions of this current Dean of Arts and a respected Member of the University of Lagos Governing Council, to theatre scholarship and practice, cultural engineering and capacity building in Nigeria, that a book is being proposed to capture the texture and aura of his cultural and artistic oeuvre to mark his 60th birthday. To this effect, abstracts and well-researched papers are invited from scholars, practitioners and professionals all over the world in the discipline of literature, language discourse, the performing arts, creative and theatre arts, culture and film studies, media and communication arts.
