International conference „Church History between Rome and Vilnius: Challenges to Christianity from the Late Middle Ages to the 20th Century“, organized by Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Science
Time and place: September 22-23, Vilnius
Tradition of Church history research / writing has never been seriously broken in the major part of Europe, but it practically ceased in Lithuania during 50 years of Soviet occupation in the 20th century. Despite some attempts to reactivate the studies of Church history in Lithuania during the last two decades (predominantly in the form of the investigation and publishing of historical sources), it still lacks more active communication with the international community of Church historians, and many important topics have not yet been considered seriously enough. Integration of the history of the christianization of Lithuania into the wider European context, and self-opening to the themes, problems and methods characteristic to the Church history research in Europe is an urgent need of the Lithuanian Church history writing now. Thus international conference dedicated to the Church history topics could be the first step in this direction.
The history of Christianity in Lithuania is clearly divided into five periods: 1) the early Christianization (14th–15th centuries), 2) the period of the Church Reforms (16th–17th centuries), 3) the period of Enlightenment (18th century – the first part of the 19th century), 4) the period of the Modernisation and Nationalisms (the second part of the 19th century – the begining of the 20th century), 5) the period of the challenges of the totalitarian regimes. Each period will be discussed in a particular session, in which historical processes in the universal Church and in the local Churches of the certain period will be confronted. At least three contributors (two invited contributors from abroad among them) are planned to take part in each session: they are to represent the points of view of the West European, Central and East European and Lithuanian historiography respectively.
If you are interested in participating, please, submit us your proposal in the maximal length of one page. Preference will be given to the papers in which general tendencies of the research of a particular period or „hot news“ (new topics, new theorical approaches, new forms of history writing etc.) will be presented.
Travel expenses, including meal and accomodation, will be reimbursed for invited contributors from abroad; the papers must be ready for publication till the beginning of the conference. The language of the conference is English. The applications are welcome till 31 March, 2011.
Proposals should be sent to:
