Professor Stefan Szymanski (City University) - The Economics and Politics of Hosting Major Sporting Events
Abstract
Governments and governing bodies in sport claim that major sporting events have large economic impacts, and support these claims with studies produced by leading consultancy forms. However, most academic research on the economic impact of major events demonstrates that the impact is negligible. This paper discusses the economic and political background against which this analysis takes place.
