CUTTING AND KILLING: JUSTIFIED VIOLENCE IN ISLAMIC THOUGHT

In this talk, Professor Gleave will examine the different types of justification for violence in Islamic thought, using examples from both classical and modern Islamic literature.

Professor Robert Gleave has published widely on Islam and law. His recent books include Scripturalist Islam: The History and Doctrines of the Akhbari School of Imami Shiism ( Brill, 2007) and Inevitable Doubt: Two Theories of Shi’i Jurisprudence (Brill, 2000). He is Principal Investigator on the AHRC and ESRC-funded project "Legitimate and Illegitimate Violence in Islamic Thought." He is also Principal Investigator for the three-year collaborative project (2009-2011) between the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies (BRISMES) and the British Institute of Persian Studies (BIPS), sponsored by the British Academy, entitled “Clerical Authority in Shi'ite Islam: The Seminaries of Iraq and Iran.” He is President of the International Society for Islamic Legal Studies.
