Call for abstracts for the AAA meeeting, November 16-20, 2011 in Montreal, QC, Canada.
Unintentional injuries are a leading cause of death among children and young adults. Worldwide, nearly one million children and young people below the age of 18 years die every year as a result of unintentional injuries while tens of millions of others require medical care for non-fatal injuries, many of whom are left with lifelong disabilities. The WHO and the United Nation’s Children’s Fund estimate that once a child reaches the age of five years, unintentional injuries constitute the biggest threat to their survival. As former Surgeon General of the United States, C. Everett Coop observed: “If a disease were killing our children in the proportion that injuries are, people would be outraged and demand that the killer be stopped.”
In spite of this dismal portrait and its widespread impact on global health, virtually no anthropological research specific to childhood injuries or injury prevention has been undertaken. The vast majority of anthropological research on pediatric health has been directed toward infectious diseases, nutrition, violence, and maternal/child health issues. This session seeks to bring together papers related to childhood injury, pediatric trauma and injury prevention so that a corpus of anthropologically-informed research can emerge. Papers that address childhood injuries and interventions related to road traffic injuries, drowning, burns, falls, and poisonings, the primary mechanisms of pediatric injury, are sought, as are papers that address some of the following issues – surveillance and data collecting, methodologies specific to pediatric trauma and injury, evidence-based interventions, and advocacy and policy efforts. Please submit paper ideas and abstracts by February 25, 2011 to:
