The Museum of the City of New York, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, is looking for motivated and energetic teachers for its Saturday Academy, a free, elective six-week program for students in grades 8-12 interested in American History or SAT preparation. Students in each class will create a hands-on, culminating project. Students will receive a certificate of completion and will have a unique learning experience to add to their college application.
Saturday Academy Instructors are responsible for developing a 6 session American history course for 8-12th grade students. There is no homework or tests and all course materials are provided. The subject material must be appropriate for this age group, and should also include a creative project for the students to do either throughout the six sessions or to culminate the course (either is fine). All classes must focus on American history, although alternative historical approaches (such as art history, music and popular culture, the history of sports, the history of public health, etc.) are encouraged.
Spring 2011 classes will meet on Saturdays April 30th, May 7th, 14th, 21st, and June 4th and 11th. Instructors teach their class twice each Saturday for both Session I and Session II. Session I classes run from 9:00 to 10:20am and Session II classes run from 10:30 to 11:50am.
Instructors receive $40/hr for 3 hours of teaching and 1 hour of class preparation. In total, instructors receive $160 each of the 6 Saturday sessions.
To request an application, please contact Joanna Steinberg, Saturday Academy Coordinator, at email@example.com. Applications are due Tuesday, January 25, 2011 (applications submitted after then will be considered for future semesters). Please note that interviews will be scheduled shortly after the deadline.
NOTE: All course proposals must correspond to your degree and field of expertise. Please also indicate in your application if you have been fingerprinted by the Department of Education.
