I am compiling and editing a book of original essays on the challenges museums are facing in addressing their educational mandates within their multiple societal roles. Public museums, including those dealing with historical events such as racial violence, war, human rights injustice, for example, seek to simultaneously advance their role as educational and historically-authorized institutions committed to object displays and historical narratives. Indeed, such museum exhibits seek a complementary relationship between the exhibit and intended educational outcomes. However, different conceptions of the ways in which we address such exhibits and what is intended to be gained from the exhibit holds promise in understanding what roles public museums ought to hold in educating its public about the past. We are interested in essays that consider museums as sites for exhibiting knowledge, as spaces for an educational encounter, and as a medium for advancing knowledge.
If you are interested in contributing to this book, tentatively titled “Beyond pedagogy: Museums and their educational imperatives,” please send a 300-500 word proposal and a shortened CV to me by February 15, 2011. Essays in this volume will contribute to a dialogue that provides a critical and creative examination of the broader relationship between museums and education.
