CFP ASA 2011: Pre-Occupied Space
We invite proposals for an interdisciplinary panel investigating spaces that are “pre-occupied,” by and with, the wronged or excluded—with former inhabitants, with older forms of racial knowledge production, with past trauma, and so on. How do we give voice to those persons, ideas, or events that haunt the spaces we occupy? If a physical space testifies to historical injustice, is it possible to write a history of the wronged or excluded through the mechanisms of exclusion themselves—through architecture, landscape design, the auction square, urban planning, decay? Special consideration will be paid to the ways in which these spaces and their spectral inhabitants inform our understanding of, and movements within, the present. We welcome papers that address these topics through such lenses as: architecture, history and/or genealogy, archeology, geography, spatial justice, landscape design, borderlands, and/or urban blight. Please email a brief (250 word) abstract and a 1-page cv to cfarrish@fulbrightmail.org by January 22.
