A colleague and I are soliciting a third paper for a proposed panel tentatively titled "Atlanticizing Charles Town" for the AHA 2012 which has an overall theme of "Communities and Networks." Papers for this panel will explore how international connections assisted in or impeded the formation of networks and organized communities in Charles Town (or Charleston) during the eighteenth century or early nineteenth century. The two papers we will be proposing are "From Siege to Stono: the Specter of Spain in 18th Century Charles Town" and "The Creation of an American Catholic Church: How French and Irish Influences Clashed in Charleston, 1790-1830." This panel would benefit from a paper exploring economic, political, or social ties between Charles Town and other nations or a paper that examines the experiences of non-English speaking people who immigrated to South Carolina during this period.
