The existing literature on European integration has focused particularly on the process of European integration and its impact on the Member states, the evolution of the institutions and the EU’s common policies. This book will explore, for the first time, how European integration has altered, impacted, improved or damaged special, privileged or traditional relations. While there is a rush to move beyond examining European integration through the lens of the nation-state (and focus more on trans- or supranational accounts of the integration process), there is still a great deal that can be gained through further analyzing the complex and highly revealing relations between member states.
The book will explore the following themes:
1) Relations between the original member states: contributions should investigate how these relations have evolved (and if not, why not) over the past 60 years.
2) Relations between the newer member states before, during and after accession: the articles should examine how cooperation has been boosted or hindered by parallel EU integration experiences, and whether these experiences have modified pre-accession relations.
3) Relations between older and newer member states: the contributions should explore (inter alia) how traditional relationships that had been put on hold during the Communist Era were reactivated once accession of former Soviet satellites became a political reality and whether new partnerships based on common interests emerged.
Interested scholars should send a 1-page abstract and a short Curriculum Vitae to the editors at m.geary@maastrichtuniversity and c.germond@maastrichtuniversity.nl.
The editors welcome proposals from various disciplines.
