Seminar Title: The Enlightenment and the Life of the Church: Worship in the Age of Reason Dates: July 11-29, 2011

This seminar will begin with a study the cultural and societal changes of the Enlightenment, particularly in England and Scotland, and examine how these changes affected the devotional and worship life of the church. Primary text, including diaries and journals, sermons and catechisms, hymns and liturgical texts, will be carefully examined. Lessons learned from this investigation will then be used to reflect on worship trends in our contemporary post-modern culture. Guest speakers, including both experts on the Enlightenment and practitioners of contemporary worship, will complement our discussions and reflections. The product of this seminar will be a collection of essays suitable for publication.
