Panel Title: Modernism & Antimodernism in American Commemorative Culture
This object of this panel will be to examine the manifold ways in which 19th and 20th century Americans memorialized the dead and how funerary and commemorative practices reflected the enthusiasm (modernist) or rejection (antimodernist) of modern industrial society.
Suggested paper topics may include, but are not limited to:
*Popular cemetery monument styles and their reflection of the modernist or antimodernist perspective
*Developments and acceptance of artificial preservation (embalming)
*Coffin and Casket designs
*Alternative burial methods
I am currently seeking both panelists and a potential chair for this panel.
