This course aims to provide a comprehensive view of the main facets involved in metagenomics thinking and practice by giving a general conceptual background and tools employed in metagenomics as well as its relationships with other emergent meta-disciplines. The methodological metagenomics challenges from sampling to the development of integrated resources and data management will be approached by a combination of lecture and practical sessions. Metagenomics is a field positioned at the intersection of many disciplines. The methodological, technical and theoretical wealth arising from such complex and dynamic field make up the biggest challenges in metagenomics, which are plenty and at many different levels in the metagenomics workflow. This course will expose the participants to these challenges at all levels of metagenomics workflow. This is a specific course devoted to bring the key players in the field of metagenomics from bench to data analysis together with early-stage experimental researchers and is interesting to anyone involved or embarking into this field. It provides a unique opportunity to catalyse lasting interactions between experimental and computational researchers. It will allow experimental biologists to gain confidence and research skills that they would otherwise have little opportunity to develop, and will enable computational systems biologists to gain first-hand experience of the challenges experimentalists encounter when using computational approaches.
