Culture, Politics, and Society on the Streets: 1500 to the present.
This panel series for the GSA’s Urban Culture Network seeks to explore all forms of expression on the street, including political, cultural and social. We welcome individual paper proposals, group submissions, as well as interest from moderators and commentators on the theme of “Culture, Politics and Society on the Streets” for the GSA’s 2011 conference in Louisville, Kentucky. Cross-cultural comparisons and interdisciplinary papers or panels are welcome. Please send proposals (abstract for paper and/or panel, 150-200 words per paper) to Chad Ross (rossch [at]ecu.edu) or Tanya Kevorkian (tanya.kevorkian[at]millersville.edu). Deadline for submissions is January 14, 2011. Topics might include, but are not limited to:
Music on the Street: from the Baroque to Hip-Hop; performance; the use of space; music that affirms and challenges authority
The Literature of the Street: themes relating to the street or even the road; the urban outdoors as a metaphor
Politics on the Street: political expression; urban reform and planning issues; combat and violent or raucous expression
Society on the Streets: life; living and sub-cultures’ development in the slums (or elsewhere); education on the streets; horizontal and vertical segregation and integration; the built environment
