Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa (Italy) is inviting scholars to submit papers for a three-session international workshop titled "Space and Conversion: Institutions, Urban Stages and Interiority (16th–20th Centuries)", which will take place at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, on 6–7 December 2011.
The workshop is devoted to the topic of conversion. In particular, our aim is to shed light on aspects of the conversion process that have been neglected by recent historiography: its physical and spatial dimensions, the connections between the interiority of the neophyte and the external space in which the conversion path takes place. The workshop encourages a global comparative approach. There are no restrictions regarding geography or religions. The chronological scope is from the 16th to the 20th century. The language of the workshop is English.
We are interested in the following key questions: 1. Is a specific institutional space devoted to following the conversion process linked to a specific vision of the latter? 2. Could an urban environment or a landscape influence and promote a conversion path? 3. Is there a spatial dimension to the interior conversion process?
We particularly invite contributions related to one or more of the following areas:
a) Institutions: institutional spaces devoted to promoting and following conversions, their statutes and regulations, their internal life, the architecture of the buildings housing them, their needs and characteristics.
b) Urban stages: cities, sanctuaries and convents, the urbanization of conversion and of proselytism, the re-semantization of urban spaces after religious changeovers, evocative landscapes and their artistic representations.
c) Interiority: the connection between the interiority of a given individual and the physical environment in which the conversion process takes place; the representation and description of inner religious transformations in spatial terms.
Please send your proposals, 500 words maximum, and a brief CV with your contact information to Giuseppe Marcocci (g.marcocci@sns.it) and Ilaria Pavan (i.pavan@sns.it)
The deadline for proposals is 31 March 2011. Responses will be sent by e-mail in April 2011.
While we are not able to offer support to cover travel expenses, the Scuola Normale Superiore will provide two nights’ accommodation for the conference and will cover all meals.
