Conference on "Jews, Slavery and the Civil War," Charleston, May 2011

The Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program and the new Center for Southern Jewish History at the College of Charleston are pleased to announce plans for a two-day conference on "Jews, Slavery and the Civil War" to be held on May 25–-26, 2011 in Charleston, South Carolina.
We invite proposals for papers and panels that cover a range of themes including (but not limited to) Jewish attitudes toward and involvement in slavery and abolition in the Americas, Jewish soldiering and wartime service, the Jewish experience on the home front, antisemitism in North and South, the impact of the war on Jewish identity and institutions, repercussions and consequences for Jews in Europe, the post-war experience of Jewish veterans, Jews and Reconstruction, and Jewish commemoration and memorialization. We also invite submissions that speak more broadly to the theme of Jews and war in the modern period.
The hosts will provide free accommodations for conference speakers, as well as a program that includes a boat trip to Fort Sumter and a walking tour of historic Charleston. Conference participants may wish to stay longer and take advantage of the Spoleto Festival’s cultural offerings, which begin on May 27.
Selected papers will be published in the American Jewish Archives Journal.
Please submit proposals of up to 300 words and a brief bio by January 1, 2011 to mendelsohna@cofc.edu.
