The three Capitals of European Culture 2010 - Istanbul, Essen, and Pécs - have provoked comments on their strikingly different historical heritage and present-day cityscapes. For an in-depth understanding of European diversity however, it is insufficient to simply juxtapose various unrelated picturesque elements. We have therefore decided to investigate Istanbul's and the Ruhr's urban and sociohistorical developments throughout modernity. It is assumed that "multiple modernities"
(Eisenstadt) developed in 19th century Europe. The aim of this conference is to make these different forms of modernity visible by focusing on closely reading the two local contexts and utilizing new approaches such as entangled histories, while avoiding a priori assumptions about how modernization should ideally progress.
The conference readdresses classic questions of modern social and urban history: how did new forms of production, trade flows, and modes of transport in these cities after 1830 affect labor, the urban space, sociabilities, and class-based identities and what were their long-term consequences?
