I would like to organize a panel for the 2011 Annual Convention in Washington, DC. The tentative title of a proposed panel is “Challenging Parental Authority in Imperial Russia.”

My paper explores the paradoxical phenomenon of the Decembrist wives’ defiance of parental and imperial authority by following their convicted husbands to Siberian exile and their sustained effort to preserve and reinforce their authority as mothers in the lives of the children they had left behind.
