A symposium dedicated to exploring artistic exchange and networks of sociability between Scotland, the wider UK, and Eastern Europe since the 1960s. Key themes addressed include historical and art historical international relations during the Cold War, Richard Demarco’s East European connections, international exhibitions and artists’ tours in the late Socialist period, and the past, present and future of teaching ‘East European’ art and art history in the UK. During lunch there will be an opportunity to visit the Royal Scottish Academy’s exhibition 10 Dialogues: Richard Demarco, Scotland and the European Avant Garde (28 November 2010 to 17 January 2011).
The event is organised as part of Dr Klara Kemp-Welch’s Leverhulme-funded project Networking the Bloc: Rethinking International Relations in European Art (based at the Courtauld Institute of Art) in association with the University of Edinburgh, and hosted by the RSA.
