James’s form after formalism
Over the last few decades, critical readings of Henry James have been prevalently inspired by the concerns of new historicism, cultural studies, gender and queer studies, critical race studies, and the like. Can these historicized and politicized lenses afford new insights for re-reading James the craftsman, reassessing the significance and operation of his narrative form? This panel invites proposals that would: explore the ways in which theoretical frames have affected our perception of James’s narrative form; address the interconnection between formal-aesthetic and cultural-ideological concerns in James’s work; redefine James’s aesthetic aims in light of non-formal concerns; etc. Send inquiries or one-page abstracts plus brief cv by January 10, 2011 to Donatella Izzo, donatella.izzo@fastwebnet.it

Voice in Henry James
This panel invites proposals for papers considering the significance and implications of “voice” in Henry James’s work. Topics might range from the impact of orality in James’s style to its representation in his prose, from questions of dialogue and characterization to matters of enunciation and narration, from James’s awareness of linguistic variety to his remarks about the American language.
