In observance of the approaching Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War, the University Archives and Records Center of the University of Pennsylvania is proud to announce the online publication of The University of Pennsylvania in the Civil War (http://www.archives.upenn.edu/faids/subjguides/civil_war_intro.html). Created by Senior Archivist Joseph-James Ahern and edited by the Director of University Archives Mark Frazier Lloyd, this guide is designed to assist researchers in accessing the Archives’ holdings related to the Civil War period. Included are administrative records, personal papers, and published works; these primarily reflect the operations of the University (through the Trustees and Faculty), and the experiences of the students. Other records, those of alumni and their families, relate to Philadelphia during the war. The collections provide minimal documentation of military service. The guide is organized by the headings: College Administration, Student Life, Medical School Administration, Philadelphia Society, Military Service, Scientific Topics, Remembrances, and Miscellaneous.
The University Archives and Records Center is the official repository for historically significant documents and other materials for the University of Pennsylvania. The holdings extend to all aspects of the history of the University, including the personal and professional papers of prominent persons associated with the University. The collections also document the history of institutions of higher learning in the United States, American intellectual life, and the Philadelphia community in which the University lives. The University Archives strives to ensure the timeless preservation of these historically significant materials and to make these materials available to researchers. Located at 3401 Market Street, Suite 210 in the University City section of Philadelphia, the University Archives is open to the University community and the scholarly public Monday – Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Additional information on the University Archives can be found at http://www.archives.upenn.edu/.
