The graduate students of the Department of History at Carleton University are pleased to announce the 17th Annual Underhill Graduate Student Colloquium, to be held on March 3 and 4, 2011, in Ottawa, Ontario. This interdisciplinary conference provides master’s and doctoral students with a collegial environment in which to present their original research and build academic contacts.
The keynote speaker for this year’s colloquium is Dr. John Milloy of Trent University, well known for his work on the history of aboriginal residential schools. The conference will conclude with his address, entitled “From Residential School to Foster Home: Child Welfare? 1940-1980.” The colloquium also features a luncheon address, delivered this year by Dr. Michel Hogue of Carleton University’s Department of History.
The colloquium organizing committee invites paper proposals on any history-related topic from students working in any field or discipline. We welcome papers dealing with any time period or geographic setting. Students participating in the conference should plan to deliver their presentations in the standard 15-20 minute time frame.
Please send a 300-word proposal, along with a brief biographical statement, to underhill@carleton.ca. The deadline for receipt of proposals is January 14, 2011.
