The Newcastle Herald has run a disappointing story that has attacked Newcastle University historian, Dr Roger Markwick, who has just received an Australian Research Council grant for a project exploring the role of Soviet women in WWII. The article unfairly compares the grant received by Dr Markwick with State Government funding for a mental health facility in Newcastle. While we do not wish to undervalue the importance of government funding for mental health, the History Council of NSW feels the article’s insinuation that financial support for history research is somehow not valid to be unreasonable. The History Council has written to the Newcastle Herald expressing its concern over this portrayal of funding for history as superfluous and we hope you will too.
