We are pleased to announce the seventh annual *research-in-progress symposium organized by the graduate students of the History, Theory, and Criticism of Architecture and Art Program in the Department of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Roland Barthes’ Death of the Author paved the way for a proliferation of studies that problematize, dismantle or critically reinforce the notion of individual or group authorship in art and architecture production. Established authors are questioned and replaced by multiple actors; agents perceived as incapable of intentional creative practices are re-conceptualized as true authors. Criticism of received notions of author and authorship advanced to the center of scholarly arguments in relation to both contemporary and pre-modern subjects.
The purpose of *research-in-progress symposium “Beyond the Author” is to bring together graduate students to critically analyze the conceptual validity of authorship. We encourage applications from students exploring the authorless or quasi-authorless practices in art and architecture of modern and contemporary periods, as well as medieval traditions, rural/peasant artistic productions, and the visual environment of everyday life in industrial societies. Papers addressing the historiographies of authorship and histories of philosophisation, mythologization or suppression of authorship are also welcome. We envision the symposium as a forum for innovative approaches to the idea of individual/group creativity, approaches that do not simply dispose of this question but rather critically engage with it within a broad spectrum of discursive platforms.
