Please join us on November 6, 2010, when Indiana University will host an interdisciplinary symposium called “Queering the Countryside: New Directions in Rural Queer Studies.” This event, co-organized by Indiana University faculty members Mary L. Gray and Colin R. Johnson, will take place from 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM in the Frangipani Room at the Indiana Memorial Union. All of Saturday's events are free and open to the public; pre-registration is not required.
"Queering the Countryside" will focus on highlighting the specific role—the place—that the concept of rurality has played, and could continue to play, in scholarship dealing with queer genders and sexualities in North American culture.
Confirmed speakers include:

Mary Pat Brady (English and Latino/a Studies, Cornell)
Brian Gilley (Anthropology and the First Nations Educational and Cultural Center, Indiana)
Mary L. Gray (Communication and Culture, Indiana)

Colin R. Johnson (Gender Studies, Indiana) v
E. Patrick Johnson (African-American Studies and Performance Studies, Northwestern)
Scott Herring (English, Indiana)
Mab Segrest (Women’s and Gender Studies, Connecticut College)
Following the day's events, symposium participants and others are invited to attend a FREE show by The Faerie Eggplant Players (a mainstay of the Idapalooza Fruit Jam, an annual queer music festival held in Middle Tennessee) who will perform "Welcome to Homo Hollow: 16 Years of Queer Country Living Celebrated through Music, Satire, Juggling and Drag." This event will take place from 9:00 - 10:30 PM in Woodburn Hall, Room 101, on the Indiana University campus.
