The Ottawa Historical Association is pleased to announce the first lecture of its 2010-2011 season. Jonathan Moore of Parks Canada will speak on "Underwater Archaeology of the Rideau Canal" this Thursday, October 21, at 8pm at the Faculty of Arts and Social Science Lounge, Dunton Tower Room 2017, Carleton University. The lecture is free and all are welcome to attend.
Between 1998 and 2005 Parks Canada's Underwater Archaeology Service (UAS)
carried out an underwater archaeological survey of the Rideau Canal
National Historic Site of Canada. The project's chief aims were to locate,
identify and inventory submerged archaeological sites on the bed and
shoreline of the canal. Jonathan Moore's presentation will describe the project's
rationale, outline the methods employed, and show some of the varied and
fascinating archaeological sites the team studied, including shipwrecks,
engineering structures and drowned landscapes.
Jonathan Moore is an underwater archaeologist with Parks Canada's
Underwater Archaeology Service (UAS) based in Ottawa. He attended Queen's
University and the University of St. Andrews (Scotland) where he obtained a
Master's Degree in Maritime Studies. Jonathan has been active in
archaeology for over twenty-five years and has been diving for over twenty.
With the UAS he has participated in or directed underwater archaeology
projects across Canada, including a survey of the Rideau Canal National
Historic Site of Canada completed a little over five years ago.
