Call for Submissions for a proposed edited collection: 'Beyond the Kitchen:
Renegotiating mothering in the late twentieth century'
In 1985 Jill Julius Matthews published her seminal work Good and Mad Women: the
historical constructions of femininity in twentieth century Australia. Her
research gave insight into the construction of normative heterosexuality - of
which motherhood is a crucial component. Twenty five years on, the image of the
'good mother' continues to hold currency in Australia. We are seeking
contributions of around 5000 words to an edited collection which explores the
ways in which women in contemporary Australia resist, renegotiate, transgress,
and redefine what it means to be a mother - or, as the case may be, to not be a
mother.
It is anticipated that this will be a multidisciplinary work, and we invite
submissions from emerging and established scholars working in the fields of
history, cultural studies, women's studies, media studies, politics, and
anthropology.
Specific examples of topics might include, but are not limited to:
- fertility
- the current debates about home birth and the privileging of medical knowledge
of the pregnant body
- childcare/working mothers
- abortion and reproductive rights
- on 'not' being a mother - childlessness and the notion of 'choice'
- postnatal depression
- the maternal body
- single motherhood
- adoption and foster care
Abstracts of 250 words are due by the 15th November 2010.
