Elites take over the city (18th-21st centuries): what does research do about it?

This transdisciplinary symposium aims to confront empirical research, its work methods and ethical commitments, when it takes on the study of elites in the city. It is for researchers, both within and outside of universities, who analyse the methods influential groups use or have used to influence the city, to give it form and significance. These methods include land ownership, lobbying, various strategies for justification, technical/legal inventions, infiltration into decision-making spheres, and many more. The symposium is thus intended to stimulate debate on the production of urban space and its enmeshed power relations, today and in the past, as well as to explore the research practices that bring about empirical results. The questions, then, are the following: how ought we to study elites and the ways in which they shape the city? According to which ethical responsibilities should we work? What are the ensuing (empirical) consequences of these choices?
