The National Socialist’s takeover of power led to the flight of numerous artists who tried more or less successfully to continue their profession in exile. On transnational and cross-genre terms it is apparent that setting up networks was essential for the vocational career. Apart from the subjective conditions, such as, prominence prior to emigration, language competence and financial status, the professional new beginning could be facilitated by professional and friendly contacts to emigrants, connections to native artists and commissioners as well as commitments to organisations and associations. Thus, the ability to communicate and adjust, as well as the emigrants’ contacts were vital for failure or success in the foreign country. Emigrants gave building orders to architects who were also emigrants. As founders of magazines and picture agencies they were able to support the success of exile photographers. Gallery owners, art dealers and collectors as well as art historians and critics were able to arrange exhibitions, positive reviews and gain buyers.

The lectures of the conference will deal with the networks, the cooperation and the support of exile artists from all genres during the Period of National Socialism. As well as socio-historical questions on co-operations, sponsors and commissioners, failure and success in the foreign environment the lectures will also place a special emphasis on the works executed during emigration. The focus isn’t only on exile countries in the western hemisphere but also on those distant host countries which up until now have not received major attention in research.
