Dear Colleagues,
We invite you to join us in the creation of a network focused on the study of “Family and Kinship.” We have begun the process of establishing a website on H-Net, which will be known as H-Kinship, and with the GSA (German Studies Association). Our goals are relatively simple:
1. We wish to facilitate the exchange of scholarly information on the subject of kinship and family;
2. We wish to speak across the boundaries of traditional disciplines and periods;
3. We wish to create a medium for trans-national scholarly cooperation at every level: discussing ideas, sharing materials, organizing conferences.
“Kinship and Family” grows out of discussions and initiatives within the GSA and represents an attempt to promote interdisciplinary cooperation. Its relationship to the GSA and its use of the GSA website should not deceive, however. It is an attempt to think “outside the box.” We encourage not only regular contributors to the GSA but also and especially scholars not currently active in the GSA—whether because their disciplines are under-represented among its members or because their research does not focus exclusively on the German-speaking world—to join the network and enter the discussion. While we hope to gather ideas for topics, sessions, and panels for future GSA programs, we also hope to encourage and create conferences and workshops beyond the framework of annual meetings and German studies in the narrower sense.
We are currently in the process of gathering names and sending out invitations, of which this is a first step. We are particularly anxious to identify colleagues from diverse scholarly backgrounds who are willing and eager to serve on the editorial board of H-Kinship. Please contact us with suggestions and questions.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Silke-Maria Weineck
