A 20th Century Journey: The Influence of William L. Shirer, Symposium on World Politics, Journalist and Their Impact on Society

The symposium will examine journalists’ role in reporting world events, their influences on our perception of those events, and how the environment in which they work controls how and what gets reported. Marking the 50th anniversary of the publication of “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” the symposium with be in part through the lens of the life and work of journalist and historian William L. Shirer. Sessions will examine Shirer’s time covering M.K. Gandhi, pre World War II Europe and McCarthyism. Scholars, journalists, and community activists will bring the past into the present by examining the current role of foreign correspondents, the use of media during the Iraq War, and the rise of hate groups in the United States.
