International conference on Cities, Cultures, Knowledge Societies (CCKS)
Virtual INST World Conference to take place at the Research Institute for Austrian and International Literature and Cultural Studies (INST)
Panel organisers: Esra Coker and Yesim Basarir
Date: November 25-28, 2010
Location: Vienna, Austria
Submission deadline: September 30, 2010
Taking Jürgen Schlaeger’s statement as a starting point, that the “readability” of a city “lies in its characters as an endless process of signification,” this panel will focus on the city as an instable literary text whose meaning shifts according to the social concerns and cultural paradigms of the time. In this case, however, instability should not be viewed as a negative delimiting term but as the preliminary stage of transformation and renewal, as the cultural site of progress whose inhabitants are also in the making. Thus, papers which focus on the transformative characteristics of urban space and their representation in literature are particularly welcomed.
