FRANÇAIS
Ce comité cherche à enquêter sur la littérature de réaliste/naturaliste du dix-neuvième siècle de rapport essentielle et la part d'arts visuels avec le genre du dix-neuvième siècle de physiologies dans le fait de décrire des types sociaux et leurs environnements. Comme les manuels pour naviguer sur les multitudes de plus en plus diverses du peuple urbain, aussi bien que maintenir le statu quo dans les régions rurales, physiologies a fixé ces types sociaux dans l'imagination visuelle et textuelle collective au cours des années 1830 et années 1840. Les papiers devraient adresser des travaux littéraires et des travaux d'art qui se croisent conjointement avec, ou détournent de, l'écran imaginaire de stéréotypes que les physiologies ont engendrés. Bien que ce comité prenne comme son modèle Les Français peints le par eux-mêmes (1840-42), les thèmes qui retiennent le genre dans d'autres langues et populations et par la durée du dix-neuvième siècle, sont aussi accueillis.
ENGLISH
This panel seeks to investigate the pivotal relationship nineteenth-century realist/naturalist literature and visual arts share with the nineteenth-century genre of physiologies in portraying social types and their environments. As handbooks for navigating the increasingly diverse multitudes of the urban populace, as well as maintaining the status quo in rural regions, physiologies fixed these social types in the collective visual and textual imagination in the 1830s and 1840s. Papers should address literary works and art works which jointly intersect with, or deflect from, the imaginary screen of stereotypes that the physiologies engendered. Although this panel takes as its model Les Français peints par eux-mêmes (1840-42), topics that engage the genre in other languages and populations, and through the duration of the nineteenth century, are also welcomed.
