The French Collection Project at The Library of Virginia (LVA) spans the years 1789-1864 with the bulk of the collection from 1848-1852. This collection consists of newspapers, broadsides, pamphlets, and maps. Many of the newspapers are the only issues of a particular title ever published. The newspapers cover a wide range of topics, including politics, social movements, cultural and business life, and even occult studies of the time. Also included are rare titles by women such as L'Opinion des Femmes and Voix des Femmes. The periodicals include material by Alexandre Dumas, Victor Hugo, Alphonse de Lamartine, Mme. Lacombe, Adolphe Thiers, Louis Blanc among others.
Newspaper title highlights from the collection:
- Le Corsaire (1849-1852)
- Le Moniteur Universel (5 May 1789-1864)
- Le Charivari (1847-1852)
- The Journées Illustrées de la Révolution de 1848 (1848), an important text that complements these
periodicals and is crucial for understanding the events of this period.
The collection of cartographic materials published in France date from 1811-1895. Many of the maps were received as part of Alexandre Vattemare's (1796-1864) Système d'Échange International, in which our institution began officially participating in 1848.
An indexed bibliography of the French Newspapers of 1848-50 in the Virginia State Library by Earl G. Swem was published in the Bulletin of the Virginia State Library in October 1916, v. 9, no. 4. It includes some pamphlets and broadsides but is not comprehensive. This bibliography has been digitized and is available through Google Books: http://tinyurl.com/yyag8bg
LVA has been the official state library and archive in Richmond, Virginia's seat of government since 1828 (http://www.lva.virginia.gov). With over 2 million bound volumes and 110 million documents in LVA’s archive, the Library remains the single largest resource for Virginia history and culture in the country.
LVA recently applied for a grant to catalog this collection. If you are interested in learning more about the collection, please contact Mary Clark at LVA.
