Duly Noted: Approaches to Paratext
This panel welcomes papers that question and analyze the roles and uses that have been made of paratexts in literature. It aims to display a broad spectrum of modalities of paratext across historical, national, linguistic, and technological boundaries, exploring some of the range that paratexts may occupy in the literary world. Some questions that may be explored are the origins of paratextual norms in different traditions, issues of authorship and intellectual property, paratexts as constructing alternate narratives, or paratexts as political tools. Papers can be from a broad range of thereoretical perspectives, including narratology and others that explicitly recognize and discuss paratext, but also from other traditions whose range and capabilities might be expanded through paratextual investigation. Literary and cinematic close readings and analyses are welcomed, as are more theoretical explorations of the topic. The panel especially invites papers that combine interpretative strategies, theoretical approaches, historical research, or cultural perspectives to produce new ways of reading paratext. Please send 250-300 word abstracts in English to Anna Strowe (astrowe@complit.umass.edu). Include with your abstract your name and affiliation, email address, and A/V needs.
