We seek submissions for a collection of new postcolonial examinations of film. Though the films can have been produced both during the colonial period and after, we are particularly interested in readings of single films contextualized historically and culturally. Especially welcome are studies that further understanding of how cinema—which developed alongside colonization and decolonization—participated in, reflected, or resisted those processes.
This collection seeks to further interdisciplinary and cross-cultural discussion of film in colonial and postcolonial cultures. Though a more narrowed focus for the collection might emerge based on the submissions received, we hope for a comparative postcolonial volume including a range of national traditions, geographic locations, and topical foci. We would also welcome essays that in their analysis combine different theoretical approaches with postcolonial studies. With this comparative approach we hope to add to the many recent exciting studies of individual postcolonial national traditions, so encouraging postcolonialists with a range of scholarly interests to encounter films they might otherwise miss.
Please send abstracts of 350-500 words with brief CV/explanation of work relevant to the topic to Rebecca Weaver-Hightower via email at rwh@und.edu or snail mail or fax to the address below by September 15, 2010. We will contact authors by September 30 for more information or to express regrets. We would like completed essays by April 30 2011.
