CALL FOR PAPERS
The history of the Poles in Canada dates to the mid-19th century with the arrival of the first wave of immigrants from the Kaszubian region of Poland. During the next 160-plus years, various waves of Polish immigration arrived on the shores of Canada, representing different ages, classes, and levels of education, while being driven by either the political or economic circumstances found in Poland. These groups created their own communities within which the preservation of their culture and language collided with the currents of Canadian assimilation. Not only did they face the socio-economic difficulties associated with settling in a new land, but they also encountered generational problems regarding already-established Polish immigrants, and those of Canadian-born Poles.
The purpose of the Special Edition of the Polish American Studies journal is to examine the various aspects of Polish history in Canada from its very beginnings to the post-Communist period. We are looking for high quality scholarly articles on possible topics dealing with, but not limited to the following:
Women’s studies
Inter/intra-generational issues
Poles in relation to other ethnic groups
Labour movement amongst Polish migrants
Trans-Canadian migration and the establishment of Polish communities
Memory and migration
Questions of citizenship and identity
Development of Polish communities
Regional comparisons (e.g. Quebec vs. Ontario) of Polish immigrant life
Involvement of Polish immigrants in Canadian political life
Polish organizational life
Manuscripts in any field of the humanities and social sciences are welcome, as are biographies and comparative studies that place the Polish experience in the context of other immigrant or ethnic experiences in Canada. The Polish American Studies is an independent, refereed journal published by the Polish American Historical Association and affiliated with the American Historical Association.
