Proposed Panel: Importing America into East Asian Cinemas
Society for Cinema & Media Studies Conference, New Orleans, 10-13 March 2011
When we think about cinematic migration between America and East Asia, what comes to mind is the exodus of notable directors (John Woo, Tsui Hawk), actors (Jackie Chan, Chow Yun-Fat, Jet Li), and choreographers (Woo Ping Yuen, Cheung-Yan Yuen, Corey Yuen) from Hong Kong to Hollywood. As Barna William Donovan suggests, the migration of Hong Kong talent in the 1990s “created one of the biggest stylistic overhauls of American cinema since Spaghetti Westerns” (5). However, as much as there was an “Asian invasion” of American cinema, far less attention has been paid to the exchange of American talent, conventions, and business to East Asia.
Proposals are welcome on topics that include:
-the migration of American actors and/or directors to East Asian Cinemas
-the incorporation of American narrative and generic conventions into East Asian Cinemas
-the expansion of American film companies into East Asia
-we welcome proposals on other aspects of American influence and/or involvement in the cinemas of Hong Kong, Japan, Mainland China, South Korea, and/or Taiwan from the 1950s to today
Please send your 300 word abstract and a brief author bio by August 1, 2010 to Dr. Lisa Funnell and Dr. Philippa Gates . Submitters will be notified by August 15th if they papers have been accepted.
