The 1st Panajachel Biennial is developing an unprecedented exhibition format that includes a young artist’s residency. Up to 15 artists under 35 will be part of a six-month residency program (April-September 2011) at the Chateau Defay in Sacatepequez, Guatemala for which we are inviting them to submit projects for consideration. We are envisioning an environment where artists can explore and create meaningful connections with the people and places they encounter. Weekly seminars will be set up to discuss dialogical and socially-engaged artistic practices, elucidating the role of art in imaging a poetics of activism, reconciliation and democratic processes as well to discussing the question of universality in art. Workshops will account for the fundamental change that has taken place from industrial society based on the “final product” to post-industrial society based on process. Process will thus be both subject matter and principle of action, entering the territory of the uncertain and unpredictable, exploring complexity, temporal aspects, interdependence and self-organization. Seminars and workshops will be led by cultural producers and theorists such as: Thomas Hirschhorn, Santiago Sierra, Rikrit Tiravanija, Tania Bruguera, Sharon Hayes, Coco Fusco, Mario Garcia Torres, Thierry de Duve, Anton Vidokle, Michael Hardt, Catherine David, etc.
