This MALAS panel seeks papers that examine the effects that recent economic and political changes have had on Mexican and U.S. communities of Mexican descent in border cities and rural areas. The panel aims to focus on less studied changes in border life, taking into account not only the ways in which borders have become fluid and mobile social and cultural spaces but also the ways in which they are being reinforced from a racial, gender, or political perspective. Possible topics may include immigration, violence, environmental deterioration, or increasing militarization. The panel is open to perspectives and methods from a variety of disciplines, including art, literature, cultural studies, history, anthropology, sociology, and political science. Please send 500 word abstract and contact information to the following address by August 1, 2010: pilar.bellver@marquette.edu
