The “Americas” disciplinary section of the Renaissance Society of America will be organizing several (ca. 5 or 6) panels for the 2011 meeting of the RSA in Montreal (March 24 – 26) on the general topic of the encounter between early modern Europe and the extra-European world. The discipline representative invites interested scholars to submit abstracts for individual papers or for entire panels on any topic that fits within this very broad rubric. Possibilities include, but are not limited to:
Ethnography & Ethnology
The Circulation and Formation of Knowledge
Maps and Mapping
Historiography
Iconography of Non-European Peoples
Transculturation
Ideologies of Nation and Empire
Translation
Race & Ethnicity
Religion and Religiosity
Trans-oceanic Subjectivity
Gender & Encounter
Globalism and Globalization
Travel Narrative
Literature and Discovery/Empire/Otherness
Every attempt will be made to assemble panels that are comparative and interdisciplinary in nature.
Interested parties should submit a one-page (250 word) abstract and an abbreviated c.v.
