The Center for the Study of the Gulf South at the University of Southern Mississippi invites proposals for "Court House, State House, Her House: Southern Women and Politics," a conference to be held March 31-April 2, 2011 in Gulfport, Mississippi at the Beachfront Marriott Courtyard. The organizers seek papers on any aspect of women's political activity in the American South, with "political activity" broadly defined. Proposals representative of women's varied racial and class backgrounds will be especially welcome.
The conference will include a keynote address by Dr. Marjorie Julian Spruill of the University of South Carolina. Dr. Anne Firor Scott will deliver closing remarks on April 1, after which there will be a reception celebrating Dr. Scott's 90th birthday.
Individual paper proposals should include a 250-word abstract, author contact information (postal and email), and a 1-3 page c.v. Organizers of complete sessions should send, in a single submission, abstracts and cvs for all presenters, cvs for session chair and commentator, contact information for all and a brief description of the session.
Submission deadline has been EXTENDED to December 15, 2010.
Please submit either proposals by mail or electronically to:
